I've been inspired by the art boxes of Louise Hibbert (See her work here), and then we found these unbelievable bookmatched pieces of macassar ebony that are so much like beetle wings- we hinged them on a box so they open. The head and legs are etched and carved glass stained dark. The "thorax" section is dark wenge wood, and the box (which you can't see from the front) is walnut. It's not quite finished- it needs some fine tuning and finish work- but ain't it awesome?
I just really like horned beetles. They give yet more evidence that males are weird all over the animal kingdom.
