Here's the new box we're working on- another with 2 glass sides. Etched butterflies and grass on the glass, spalted tamarind on the other 2 sides, and for the base, a gorgeous piece of spalted maple with a live edge. The top will have a small butterfly-etched piece of glass surrounded by maple, we think. It's cold here in central Texas- 2 freezing nights in a row and more to come. I guess we're longing for Spring. And I guess we're whiny brats since the weather here was gorgeous until last week- our roses bloomed again at the start of December, and we saw butterflies last week. Poor dead butterflies.

A new box in our series of wood boxes with two glass sides: jellyfish! The jellyfish have nice etched detail, and the box is purpleheart with some wenge and holly accents. We put a slice of spalted maple root burl with live edge on the top, since it looks sort of like a coral reef. It's really pretty with light behind it. When I was a child, I spent several summers on High Island, one of the Thimble Islands off the Connecticut coast in Long Island Sound. We kids hunted jellyfish with pointy sticks- they were beautiful, pink with lavender tentacles and a pink-red star on top. We'd pull them out of the water and they'd dry on the rocks, and a few days later there would be a pink star stained into the rocks. Yes, we were mean kids, right out of Lord of the Flies. In our defense, if one of those jellyfish tentacles touched you, you'd get sick almost immediately, and we considered ourselves the archnemeses of the jellyfish world. This box is now for sale at the bottom of our "wood and glass boxes" page. Tom and I have had this big beautiful piece of spalted maple root burl for about a year, and have argued about what to do with it. I won the argument, and we made this weird thing. The root burl is the back of the box, and the rest is made of spalted pecan. The lid is handcarved and there is inlaid turquoise inside the box. I love it- especially the way the top looks folded, and the way the top fits the base is great. It's been a while since we've done something without glass in it, and it's nice to get away from the fragile and rigid nature of glass for a while. It will be for sale under "constructed boxes" this week! |
